Transportation
There are a lot of ways to get to Metz. The most popular is by TGV which is very fast, but some prefer traveling by either plane or own means of transportation.
Get in
There is a small regional airport for Metz and Nancy, located southeast of Metz. This mainly handles commercial traffic, but there are passenger flights from Paris, Lyon, Algiers, and several Italian cities.
The train station is at the southern edge of the city center. Metz is connected to the French TGV network, which provides direct trains from Paris, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. The time it takes to get from Paris to Metz is 82 minutes. Additionally Metz is served by the ‘Lorraine TGV’ train station, located at Louvigny, 25 km south of Metz, for high speed trains going to Nantes, Rennes, Lille or Bordeaux without stopping in Paris. ‘Lorraine TGV’ is at a 75 min distance by train from Paris Airport, Roissy - Charles de Gaulle.
Metz is ideally located at the intersection of two major axes: A4 motorway, going from Paris to Strasbourg and A31 linking Nancy, Dijon and Lyon from the south to Luxembourg in the north. Also the A4 is a part of the E50 Motorway connecting Paris, France to Prague and the Czech Republic.
Get around
Driving in the center of town is not recommended. Park in one of the parking areas and walk or use the public transportation. Everything in the city center is easily accessible on foot and much of main downtown and shopping areas are pedestrianised. Be warned, though, that there are a few hills.
