Attractions

Metz offers some of the most unique attractions in Europe. Some of these attractions include the city’s medieval gates, an ancient church and a museum spanning over sixty rooms.

 

 

Tourist Attractions

• Cathedrale St-Etienne

Info: The Cathedral is a truly impressive structure, overlooking the river and the city. Inside, both its height (the third-tallest nave in France) and its stained glass windows will impress visitors.

• Opera-Theatre

Info: Not far from the Cathedral, is a theatre and opera house, built between 1732 and 1752 and the oldest in France.

• Porte des Allemands

Info: The German Gate was built around 1230 when a wall was being constructed to protect the town from attack. The area has for many centuries been a place of dispute between French and German control. The name of this spectacular gate to the city comes from the friars of Notre Dame Allemands who ran a hospital close to the site. The gate was extensively damaged by Allied forces when they liberated Metz in 1944, but remains a notable tourist attraction.

• Saint Pierre aux Nonnains Basilica

Info: This ancient church has origins as far back as Roman times. It is thought that originally the beautiful building would have been part of a large Roman spa complex that covered a great deal of this area of Metz. The first bricks were probably laid around 380AD and it is possible to spot the original brickwork because of the distinctive red stripes on the structure. Throughout the centuries the church was added to and developed into a women’s abbey and later a church.

• La Cour d’Or

Info: A fine museum which carries a large collection of artworks and artifacts housed in over sixty rooms. There are many artifacts and antiquities from Roman times as well as a great collection of European paintings.
